Music: Distraction? or A Helper? (R)
People say there are many distractions in school. Some say it's chewing gum, texting, tweeting, talking, eating/drinking in class ect. but other say music which I strongly disagree with. Music is basically life too some students. Without music, some classes would be chaos. There are many advantages to listening to music. One advantage is it helps relax students and to focus on work. For example, say you have a class that is very distracting. Students are talking behind and in front of you, some are tapping pencils and clicking pens, and your stressing over studying for a test. A student has two options: sit there and never be able to get his/her work done or put on head phones to help them relax and focus and not hear the distractions around them. If I was in that situation, I would put on the headphones wouldn't you? Another reason is it helps teachers get the class to settle down in some situations. Sometimes in Ms. Edsell's class ( My English Class) she lets us listen too music. When we listen to music, the class is less talkative and more quiet verse the times we cannot listen to music and we just talk to other students, get distracted, and become part of the distractions. Sometimes getting out of hand and our class getting points taken away. I love music and honestly can't really focus in class if I can't listen to it. Too many things distract me in class for me to. So to all teachers, music is not a distraction; it just helps drain them out.

I love music but I think it can definitely be both a distraction and an advantage during class. For some students listening to music while doing work doesn't help at all. It can cause them to focus more on the song or flipping through their music library instead of actually working or focusing on a teacher. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that it doesn't help some students. Some students like myself can get very distracted by noises that occur around them. For example, if a kid drops a book or a pencil my reaction would be to immediately stop whatever I'm doing and turn around to see what the noise came from. But if i have headphones in I'm less likely to care about the noise going on around me. Whenever I listen to music it hardly ever becomes a distraction from my work. I find that when I'm not listening to something then working on an assignment causes me to stress more over it and get hardly any work done apposed to listening to music and feeling calm and relaxed. Whether it is a distraction or not all depends on the kind of person someone is.
